Pope Leo Mourns Venezuela Quake Victims, Urges Global Support as Death Toll Tops 1,400
Pope Leo XIV has called for prayers and international solidarity with the people of Venezuela following the twin earthquakes that have killed more than 1,400 people and left widespread devastation across the country.

Delivering his Angelus message at the Vatican, the pontiff expressed sorrow over the tragedy and assured survivors that they were not alone.
He prayed for those who lost their lives, offered condolences to grieving families and remembered the many people injured or displaced by the disaster.
The Pope also paid tribute to emergency workers, volunteers and rescue teams who have continued searching through the rubble despite difficult conditions in the worst-hit communities.

The powerful earthquakes, which struck earlier in the week, caused extensive destruction in several parts of Venezuela, with La Guaira among the hardest-hit areas. Thousands of people remain missing as rescue operations continue around the clock.
Pope Leo appealed to the international community to extend practical assistance to Venezuela, stressing that the nation would need sustained support as it recovers from one of its deadliest natural disasters in recent years.
To assist relief efforts, the Vatican has already released an initial emergency donation of €100,000 through the Apostolic Almoner’s Office.

Catholic parishes and Caritas organisations across Venezuela have also opened shelters and expanded humanitarian assistance for families forced from their homes.
