Ronaldo Draws Attention After Liking Post Branding FIFA ‘Corrupt’

Cristiano Ronaldo has sparked fresh discussion after liking a social media post that featured a journalist describing FIFA as “one of the most corrupt institutions on the planet.”

The post contained comments made by Spanish journalists Pilar Rodrigues Losantos and Ruben Amon during a discussion on the television programme Espejo Público ahead of the World Cup final.

Losantos questioned Argentina’s progress in the tournament and alleged that the team had benefited from FIFA’s influence to avoid elimination on several occasions.

She also claimed that Argentina’s opponents would be facing more than just Lionel Messi’s team, suggesting that FIFA itself could be working in Argentina’s favour.

“I believe we won’t just be playing against Argentina, but against the entire FIFA institution, which wants to hand the World Cup to Messi, just as happened four years ago in Qatar,” she said.

Amon also launched a fierce attack on FIFA, describing it as “mafia-like” and criticising the rising cost of attending major football matches.

He argued that football, once regarded as a sport for ordinary people, had increasingly become an experience reserved for the wealthy.

Ronaldo’s verified account was reportedly among those that liked the post, attracting widespread attention from football fans and social media users.

Portugal had been eliminated by Spain in the last 16 of the tournament, while Spain later defeated Argentina 1–0 after extra time in the final, with Ferran Torres scoring the decisive goal in the 106th minute.

Ronaldo has not publicly explained his reaction to the post, but his reported like has renewed conversations about FIFA’s leadership, governance and influence over the sport.
