Former Nurse Faces Trial in Case of Three Children Allegedly Strangled to Death

The trial of Lindsay Clancy, a former labour and delivery nurse accused of killing her three young children, is set to begin in Massachusetts more than three years after the case shocked the United States.

Clancy is accused of killing her children, five-year-old Cora, three-year-old Dawson and eight-month-old Callan, at their home in Duxbury on January 24, 2023.

The tragedy came to light after her husband, Patrick Clancy, returned home from a brief trip to pick up takeout food and medicine for one of the children.

Prosecutors say Patrick became alarmed when he found the house unusually quiet. When he discovered that a bedroom door was locked, he forced his way inside and reportedly found blood in the room and an open second-floor window.

Outside the house, he found his wife seriously injured.

According to court documents, Lindsay told her husband that she had attempted to take her own life. When he asked about the children, she directed him to the basement.

Patrick then found the three children unconscious.

Emergency responders rushed the children to hospital, but all three were later pronounced dead. Investigators allege that the children had been strangled.

Lindsay survived the fall from the window but suffered injuries that left her paralysed. She was subsequently charged with three counts of murder, along with additional charges relating to strangulation.

She has pleaded not guilty.

The defence is expected to argue that Clancy should not be held criminally responsible for the deaths because of the state of her mind at the time of the incident.

Her lawyer, Kevin Reddington, has previously said that Clancy had a long history of depression and voluntarily admitted herself to a psychiatric hospital less than a month before the children died.

The defence has also pointed to several changes to her psychiatric medication in the weeks before the tragedy, arguing that her mental condition deteriorated significantly during that period.

“Our society fails miserably in treating women with postpartum depression or even postpartum psychosis,” Reddington said during an earlier court hearing.

Prosecutors, however, are expected to argue that Clancy remained legally responsible for her actions.

Under Massachusetts law, defendants can argue that they were not criminally responsible because of mental illness, but they must show that they were unable to understand that their actions were wrong or unable to control their conduct at the time of the alleged offence.

Clancy is currently being held at Tewksbury Hospital, a state-run medical facility in Massachusetts.

The trial is expected to hear testimony from medical experts, mental health professionals, investigators and family members as jurors consider the circumstances surrounding the deaths and whether Clancy can be held criminally responsible.

The case has become one of the most closely watched American trials involving maternal mental health and criminal responsibility in recent years.
