Midnight Storm Kills 20 on Cameroon-Nigeria Boat Trip, 18 Nigerians Dead
At least 20 people, including 18 Nigerians, have died after a boat carrying more than 50 passengers capsized during a violent storm while travelling from Cameroon towards Nigeria.
The boat was reportedly making its way from Garoua in Cameroon to Dasin, a community in Fufore Local Government Area of Adamawa State, when disaster struck late Monday night.
Eyewitnesses said the vessel was heavily loaded with passengers as well as iron rods and other building materials intended for Dasin.
The boat reportedly encountered a severe storm around midnight and overturned, sending passengers into the water.
Initial reports put the possible death toll at about 30. However, local authorities have so far confirmed that around 20 people died in the accident.
Eighteen of the victims identified as Nigerians have reportedly been buried in Wuro Bokki community in Fufore Local Government Area, according to sources familiar with the incident.
Search and rescue efforts are continuing for passengers who remain unaccounted for.
Divers from Cameroon and Nigeria are reportedly involved in the operation, while survivors are receiving treatment at hospitals in communities near the border.
Authorities have yet to establish the final number of survivors and missing passengers as rescue operations continue.
