Claudia Sheinbaum Elected as Mexico’s First Woman President

Claudia Sheinbaum made history on Sunday by becoming Mexico’s first woman president, winning by a landslide.

The former Mexico City mayor secured around 58-60 percent of the vote, leading by over 30 percentage points against her main rival, Xochitl Galvez. Celebrations erupted in Mexico City’s main square, where supporters sang and danced to mariachi music. “I won’t fail you,” Sheinbaum promised to the cheering crowd.

Despite a violent electoral process marked by drug cartel-related violence and the murder of over two dozen local politicians, voter turnout was high at 60 percent. The new president aims to tackle Mexico’s issues with crime and gender-based violence.

Outgoing President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, a key ally and mentor to Sheinbaum, congratulated her on her historic win. Sheinbaum plans to continue his “hugs not bullets” crime strategy while addressing the deep-seated violence and corruption in the country.
