Attack on Plateau Rural Community Leaves Dozens Dead, Homes Destroyed

A late-night assault on Kawel village in Mushere District of Bokkos Local Government Area in Plateau State has left multiple people dead and forced survivors to flee, in another episode of violence affecting rural communities in the state.

The attack occurred around 11:30pm on Sunday while residents were asleep. Witnesses said armed men entered the village and opened fire, causing panic as families attempted to escape into nearby bushes.

Local sources, including youth leader Christopher Luka, said the attackers struck without warning and left behind a scene of destruction.

He said security agencies were informed shortly after the incident, but many residents had already been killed or injured.

Emergency responders reported that victims included civilians and workers at a primary healthcare centre in the area.

The facility was also said to have been targeted during the assault, worsening the impact on the community’s access to medical care.

The number of casualties increased as injured victims later died while receiving treatment in nearby hospitals.

Several houses were also burnt, along with food storage facilities, leaving many families displaced and without shelter.

Authorities in Plateau State condemned the attack and described it as unacceptable. Security agencies were directed to strengthen their presence in the area and begin efforts to identify those responsible.

Police confirmed that personnel had been deployed to the community to restore order and prevent further escalation. Tactical units were also dispatched as part of ongoing operations in the affected area.

The incident adds to a series of violent attacks across Plateau communities in recent months, raising concerns among residents about persistent insecurity despite repeated government interventions and assurances.

Investigations are ongoing as affected families and community leaders call for sustained security measures and protection for rural settlements.
