Chad’s military leader, Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, has emerged triumphant in the nation’s presidential election, according to preliminary official results released Thursday.
Deby Itno’s first-round win solidifies his family’s enduring control over Chad, marking a significant transition from three years of military rule. The election, held on Monday, signifies a pivotal moment in the nation’s efforts to transition away from military governance and towards a more democratic future. With 61.03% of the votes, Deby Itno surpassed his closest rival, Prime Minister Succes Masra, who garnered only 18.53%. While Deby Itno declared himself the elected president of Chad, Masra expressed concerns about potential manipulation of the results by Deby’s camp.
The announcement of Deby Itno’s victory sparked mixed reactions across the capital, with supporters celebrating in the streets while others sought refuge amidst gunfire. Despite the jubilation, reports of injuries from falling bullets serve as a stark reminder of the challenges ahead for Chad as it navigates this transition of power.
