College of Medicine inducts 94 doctors
The College of Medicine, University of Lagos (CMUL), on Tuesday inducted 94 medical professionals comprising 79 medical doctors and 15 dental surgeons from the 2024/2025 academic session into the medical and dental professions.
The ceremony, held at the CMUL Complex, Idi-Araba, marked the graduates’ formal transition into clinical practice and public health.
Speaking at the event, the Provost of CMUL, Prof. Ademola Oremosu, congratulated the newly inducted doctors and dental surgeons, describing their graduation as the beginning of a new phase of service to humanity.
Oremosu said that the college had equipped the inductees with the knowledge, skills and values required to make meaningful contributions to healthcare delivery.
“We have laid a solid foundation for your career and instilled in you professionalism, courage and character.
“Be good ambassadors of the College of Medicine and remember the values you have been taught, even when faced with challenges,” he said.
The provost urged the graduates to aspire to leadership and excellence, noting that their responsibilities extended beyond treating patients.
“As medical and dental practitioners, you are also teachers, mentors, advocates and role models. You must demonstrate empathy and provide holistic care to your patients,” he said.
Oremosu noted that the healthcare sector continued to face challenges from communicable and non-communicable diseases, including malaria, HIV/AIDS, Ebola, hypertension and diabetes, and called on the new doctors to contribute to improving healthcare outcomes in the country.
Delivering the induction lecture, Prof. Azeez Butali, Professor of Oral and Craniofacial Sciences at the University of Iowa, U.S., urged the newly inducted doctors and dentists to uphold professionalism, resilience, empathy and integrity in their careers.
Butali advised the graduates to embrace gratitude, mentorship, resilience and financial discipline in the pursuit of their careers.
“The journey to success is not a lonely one. Someone helped, taught, supported and prayed for you. Always remain grateful to those who made sacrifices for your success,” he said.
He encouraged the inductees to be proactive in pursuing opportunities and seek mentors who could guide their personal and professional development.
“I stand here today because I stood on the shoulders of giants. I am a beneficiary of great mentorship,” he said.
The professor also advised the graduates to remain focused in the face of challenges, plan for their financial future through savings and investments, and prioritise their mental health amid the pressures of professional life.
Also speaking, the Registrar of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), Prof. Fatima Kyari, who administered the oath on the inductees, enumerated the rules and regulations guiding the profession.
Kyari described the profession as rewarding and assured the newly inducted doctors of fulfilling careers.
She further enlightened them on the housemanship programme and charged them to remain humble and uphold patient confidentiality, even after the death of such patients.
In her goodwill message, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, advised the doctors to always remember their source and remain committed to excellence.
Ogunsola, who was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Development Services, Prof. Afolabi Lesi, said the Vice-Chancellor was particularly proud of the graduating class for their impressive record of medical publications.
She noted that graduation marked the beginning of another phase of learning and service and wished the graduates success in their future endeavours.
The event also featured the recognition of top-performing graduates with awards, alongside the presence of healthcare practitioners, lecturers, relatives and friends who came together to honour the new inductees.
