Dreams Cut Short as Nigerian Medical Student Dies After Russian Strike

What was meant to be one of the happiest moments of her life ended in heartbreak after a Nigerian medical student, Nnani Adaobi Marian, died from injuries she sustained during a Russian aerial attack on the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv.

The 23-year-old, who was preparing to graduate from Kharkiv National Medical University, passed away in a hospital in Germany on July 5 after days of intensive medical care.

She had been critically injured on June 29 when a guided aerial bomb struck Kharkiv, where she had travelled for her graduation ceremony.

Announcing the sad development on Monday through her X account, Victoria Bohuslavska said Adaobi could not survive despite the efforts of doctors in both Ukraine and Germany.

She noted that Adaobi had travelled to Kharkiv alongside her friend, 23-year-old Fatima Huseynova, who was killed in the same attack.

“They had their whole life ahead of them,” Bohuslavska wrote while mourning the two young women.

In a separate tribute titled “In Memory of Nnani Adaobi Marian,” Kharkiv National Medical University described her as an outstanding student whose determination and commitment distinguished her throughout her years of study.

The institution said Adaobi enrolled in the university in 2020 and consistently recorded excellent academic performances.

It added that she broadened her medical knowledge through international internships, including at the University of Cambridge in 2024 and Biruni University in Türkiye in 2025, where she also participated in scientific research.

According to the university, Adaobi was known for her kindness, humility and willingness to help others.

Lecturers and classmates remembered her as a hardworking, intelligent and compassionate young woman who built strong relationships with people wherever she went.

The university extended its condolences to her family, friends and colleagues, saying she would always be remembered as a valued member of the institution whose promising future was tragically cut short.

As of the time this report was filed, the nationality of Adaobi had not been independently confirmed
