FIFA Dismisses Belgium’s Protest, Clears Balogun for USA’s World Cup Knockout Clash
FIFA has turned down an appeal lodged by the Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA), confirming that United States forward Folarin Balogun remains eligible to feature in his country’s FIFA World Cup Round of 16 encounter.

The controversy began after Balogun received a red card during the USA’s victory over Bosnia on July 1, resulting in a one-match suspension.
The decision later took an unexpected turn when FIFA overturned the ban, a move that came after U.S. President Donald Trump revealed he had spoken with FIFA President Gianni Infantino over the matter.
Following the reversal, Trump publicly welcomed the decision, describing it as the correction of an unfair ruling.
Belgium, however, questioned the process and swiftly challenged FIFA’s decision, arguing that Balogun should not be allowed to participate in the knockout fixture.
On Monday, FIFA’s Appeal Committee dismissed Belgium’s protest, ruling the case inadmissible and leaving the earlier decision unchanged.

The outcome means Balogun is free to represent the United States in the crucial last-16 tie.
In a statement, the Belgian Football Association expressed disappointment with the ruling, saying it had not been provided with the detailed reasons behind FIFA’s decision or copies of documents it had requested, including the referee’s report.
The federation argued that the lack of transparency was inconsistent with FIFA’s own regulations.
The RBFA also disclosed that it has formally notified the United States Soccer Federation that it continues to dispute Balogun’s eligibility should he be named in the matchday squad, indicating that it is considering additional legal or disciplinary steps.

Despite Belgium’s objections, FIFA’s decision stands, ensuring Balogun will be available for the United States as they continue their quest for World Cup glory.
