Nigerians Demand Super Falcons Overhaul After World Cup Exit
Calls for major changes to Nigeria’s Super Falcons have intensified after the team lost 2-1 to South Africa in a 2027 Women’s World Cup intercontinental play-off in Morocco on Thursday.
The defeat ended Nigeria’s hopes of reaching next year’s World Cup in Brazil, while South Africa advanced to the next stage of the qualification process.
The Falcons were put under pressure after Thembi Kgatlana gave Banyana Banyana the lead, with Refiloe Jane later making it 2-0.
Nigeria responded through Christy Ucheibe, who converted a penalty to reduce the deficit, but the South Africans held firm to secure the victory.
The result has left many Nigerian supporters questioning the direction of a team that has traditionally dominated women’s football on the continent.
Some fans called for a complete rebuilding of the squad, while others focused their criticism on head coach Justin Madugu.
“Total overhaul, new coach and his crew should scout for new players,” @Amac1306 posted on X.
@Retr0Zavage expressed disbelief at the team’s decline, asking: “How did the Super Falcons become so bad in the space of a year?”
Madugu’s tactical decisions also attracted criticism, particularly his choice of players.
@olubunmi4ever questioned the decision to start Ordega, saying the team showed “no tactics, no pattern, no strategy.”
Another supporter, @SisoChukwuemeka, called for Madugu’s immediate removal and argued that some of the older players should retire to allow younger talents to take over.
The criticism followed a disappointing campaign for the Falcons, who had been expected to challenge strongly for a place at the global tournament.
With qualification now beyond Nigeria, the Nigeria Football Federation faces renewed pressure to assess the coaching set-up, player selection and overall preparation of the Super Falcons ahead of future competitions.
