FIFA Rules Out World Cup Ban as Senegal Face CAF Sanctions Over AFCON Final Walk-Off
FIFA has moved to dampen calls for Senegal to be barred from the 2026 World Cup, even as the Confederation of African Football (CAF) weighs disciplinary action over the Teranga Lions’ conduct during the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final.
The controversy followed a tense moment in the AFCON final when Senegalese players briefly walked off the pitch in protest against a disputed penalty decision.
The action sparked outrage among fans and officials and prompted CAF to open formal disciplinary proceedings against the team and its officials.
In a statement released after the match, CAF condemned the behaviour, describing it as unacceptable and contrary to the values of the game.
The continental body confirmed that it is reviewing match footage and reports from officials, with sanctions expected once deliberations are concluded.
While the incident has triggered demands for severe punishment, including calls for Senegal to be excluded from the 2026 World Cup, FIFA is understood to oppose such measures.
According to reports from French sports daily L’Equipe, world football’s governing body does not consider a World Cup ban appropriate and is not actively considering extending the matter beyond CAF’s disciplinary framework.
Sources familiar with the case say CAF’s likely response will involve financial penalties and targeted suspensions rather than team-wide punishment.
Proposed sanctions reportedly include fines running into tens of thousands of euros and possible bans for head coach Pape Bouna Thiaw and individual players deemed to have played a leading role in the protest.
Senegal’s representatives appeared before CAF’s disciplinary panel earlier this week.
The delegation, led by the Senegalese Football Federation’s secretary general and supported by legal counsel, answered questions on the events surrounding the final.
Coach Thiaw, alongside players Ismaila Sarr and Illiman Ndiaye, was also questioned during the hearing. A decision is expected within the timeframe set by the panel.
Despite FIFA’s stance, pressure for tougher sanctions has continued from sections of the football and legal community.
Moroccan lawyer Adil Mouline has publicly argued that Senegal should be stripped of their AFCON title and suspended from the next World Cup, insisting that anything less would undermine accountability in African football.
However, FIFA’s reluctance to escalate the issue reflects a broader desire to keep continental disciplinary matters within the appropriate regional structures, particularly as preparations intensify for the expanded 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
For now, Senegal’s place on the road to the 2026 World Cup remains unaffected, with the final outcome resting on CAF’s impending disciplinary ruling rather than intervention from global football authorities.
