I Hope Cancer Becomes Just a Zodiac Sign — Alex Ekubo’s Death Sparks Fresh Warning on Late-Stage Cancer

Long before death knocked quietly at his door, Nollywood actor Alexx Ekubo once posted a line that now reads like a haunting whisper from the other side of pain: “I hope to see a day when cancer would just be a zodiac sign.”

In the wake of reports surrounding his passing, the resurfaced tweet has gripped social media like smoke after a fire, lingering, heavy and impossible to ignore.

Beneath the polished smiles, red carpets and camera flashes, the actor was reportedly fighting a private battle with advanced cancer, a reminder that illness often wears expensive clothes and hides behind cheerful photographs.

The tragedy once again exposes the dangerous culture of silent suffering, especially among public figures and young adults who fear stigma, public pity or career decline.

According to the World Health Organization, cancer remains one of the leading causes of death globally, with many cases detected too late because symptoms are ignored or hidden.

The organization notes that early diagnosis significantly improves survival rates. Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the WHO, has repeatedly stressed that awareness and timely medical care remain among the strongest weapons against cancer.

In Nigeria, oncologists have also warned that fear, misinformation and financial hardship continue to push many patients into late presentation, when treatment becomes more difficult.

Medical specialists say liver-related cancers are particularly dangerous because the body often whispers before it screams.

Symptoms such as unexplained weight loss, persistent fatigue, abdominal swelling, yellowing of the eyes and prolonged digestive discomfort are frequently dismissed until the disease has spread.

The American Cancer Society explains that cancers detected at Stage 4 may already have travelled to other organs, reducing treatment options and survival chances.

While liver transplantation can save some patients under carefully selected conditions, transplant surgeons caution that outcomes depend heavily on timing, overall health and whether the cancer has metastasized. As experts often say in oncology circles, cancer thrives in silence the way rust eats quietly through iron.

Beyond the medical headlines, Alex Ekubo’s story has reopened a deeper conversation about emotional pressure, online cruelty and the hidden fractures beneath celebrity culture.

Mental health professionals warn that chronic stress and emotional isolation can worsen existing illnesses and weaken recovery.

The National Cancer Institute notes that while stress alone may not directly cause cancer, it can affect sleep, immunity and overall wellbeing during treatment.

In a digital age where pain is turned into trending content within minutes, health advocates say compassion should no longer be treated as a luxury. Sometimes, the loudest cry for help arrives dressed as silence.

Strong 7.8 Quake in Philippines Leaves Multiple Dead, Sparks Widespread Tsunami Alerts A powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck the southern Philippines on Monday morning, leaving multiple people dead and triggering tsunami alerts across several Pacific countries as authorities rushed to contain the unfolding disaster. The quake hit near Sarangani province in Mindanao at a shallow depth, sending violent tremors through towns and cities including General Santos, where buildings collapsed and residents fled into the streets in panic. Emergency officials confirmed fatalities across different locations, including Davao Occidental, South Cotabato and General Santos, while rescue teams combed through debris in search of survivors as aftershocks continued to rattle the region. A second quake measuring 6.1 struck hours later, worsening the damage and intensifying fears among already displaced communities. Preliminary readings from the United States Geological Survey and other agencies showed slight variations in magnitude and depth, as scientists continued to analyse seismic data in real time. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued alerts for several countries, warning that waves could reach coastal areas of the Philippines and parts of Indonesia, Palau, Taiwan and Papua New Guinea within hours. In some coastal zones, waves of more than three metres were considered possible. Authorities ordered immediate evacuations in vulnerable coastal communities, urging residents to move quickly to higher ground as a precaution against potential tsunami impact. Flights were suspended at General Santos International Airport, while schools and public services were temporarily shut down across affected areas as emergency operations expanded. President Ferdinand Marcos called for urgent action and calm, stressing that saving lives remained the top priority as rescue efforts intensified across the region. The Philippines, located along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” is one of the most seismically active countries in the world, frequently exposed to earthquakes and volcanic activity. Neighbouring Japan and other Pacific nations also issued tsunami advisories as monitoring agencies continued to track possible wave developments across the region.
