Indonesia School Collapse: Death Toll Rises To 14, Dozens Still Missing

The number of people confirmed dead in the collapse of an Islamic boarding school in Indonesia has risen to 14, as rescue workers continue the desperate search for dozens more feared trapped under the rubble.

Officials said the multi-storey building in Sidoarjo, East Java, gave way suddenly on Monday while students gathered for afternoon prayers. The force of the collapse shook nearby buildings and sent panic through the community.

According to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), nine additional bodies were recovered on Friday, raising the toll to 14. Search operations are ongoing for 49 people still missing, with rescuers now using heavy machinery to clear deep layers of debris.

BNPB chief Suharyanto, who goes by one name, told local broadcaster Kompas TV that the search has entered a new phase.

“After the last victim was found last night, we are focusing on a massive cleanup. Heavy equipment has now entered the collapsed areas,” he said.

The use of heavy machinery had initially been delayed as families of the missing hoped survivors could still be found alive during the critical 72-hour window known as the “golden period.”

The rescue effort has faced several challenges, including an earthquake that struck nearby on Tuesday night, temporarily halting operations. Officials added that the delicate structure of the rubble made the mission risky, as vibrations in one area could trigger further collapse.

Preliminary investigations suggest poor construction quality may have caused the tragedy. Engineers at the scene noted visible signs of structural weakness in the remaining sections of the building.

Local authorities have vowed to conduct a full probe into the incident and ensure that safety standards are enforced to prevent future disasters.

Meanwhile, grief has enveloped the community. Families continue to wait anxiously at the scene, hoping for news—any news—of their loved ones.

Rescue teams say their priority remains the same: to recover every victim and bring closure to the waiting families.
