Malawi and Mozambique have signed an agreement to conduct joint military operations focused on tackling drug and human trafficking. The agreement, endorsed by the Southern African Development Community (SADC), was signed in Maputo during the 16th session of the Mozambique-Malawi Permanent Joint Commission on Defence and Security.
Defense ministers from both countries highlighted that poverty and economic challenges have contributed to the rise in human trafficking.
Rodrick Mulonya of the Malawi Network Against Trafficking in Persons praised the agreement as a significant step but stressed the need for broader regional cooperation and a multi-sectoral approach to combat trafficking effectively.
Despite existing anti-trafficking laws across the region, Africa Legal Aid notes that poverty continues to enable trafficking, with many victims lured by false promises of a better life.
