MOZAMBIQUE: Frelimo Candidate Declared Winner in Maputo Amid Ongoing Vote Count

In Mozambique’s capital, Maputo, the electoral commission announced that Daniel Chapo, the ruling Frelimo party’s candidate, has won with 54% of the votes during the ongoing count for the presidential and parliamentary elections held on October 9, 2024.

Independent candidate Venancio Mondlane received 34%, while Ossufo Momade from the opposition party Renamo garnered 9.6%. Chapo stated, “I call on citizens to be patient and await the official results,” emphasizing that the current figures are not final and must be validated by the Constitutional Council, which has no set deadline for its decision.

Meanwhile, Mondlane warned, “If the ruling party declares victory, I will initiate a nationwide strike to paralyze Mozambique.”
