President William Ruto of Kenya has announced significant austerity measures in response to ongoing public protests.
The measures include eliminating budgets for the offices of the First Lady and Second Lady, banning the purchase of new government vehicles, dissolving 47 state agencies, and suspending non-essential government travel. Additionally, the number of presidential advisers has been halved.
These steps aim to address public demands for transparency and better governance after three weeks of protests. The protests have seen citizens call for greater accountability and a reduction in government expenditure. President Ruto’s actions are seen as a move to regain public trust and demonstrate fiscal responsibility in the face of mounting pressure.
