Nigeria Faces Fresh Fear as Bandits Impose N10m Levy on Katsina Communities
Fresh fear has spread across parts of Katsina State after armed bandits reportedly imposed a N10 million levy on two communities in Bakori Local Government Area despite existing peace agreements in the area.
The affected communities, Garin Lamido and Yan Shuni, were said to have received the demands from gunmen loyal to notorious bandit leader, Isiya Kwashen Garwa.
The development has heightened tension among residents, with reports indicating that several families have started fleeing their homes over fears of possible attacks.
Security analyst and conflict journalist Bakastine disclosed the incident in a post on his X handle, where he expressed concern over the continued vulnerability of rural communities in the North-West.
Residents of the affected communities reportedly described the situation as another sign that previous peace deals with armed groups have failed to bring lasting security.
Many locals also lamented the growing insecurity affecting farming and daily activities, as fear continues to spread across several villages in the region.
Despite ongoing military operations in parts of Katsina State, bandit groups are still said to maintain influence in some rural areas, where communities are often forced to pay levies or face violent attacks.
Security observers have warned that continuous payment of such demands could further embolden criminal groups and worsen insecurity across northern Nigeria.
