Nigeria Politics Shaken As Osun Governor Adeleke Quits PDP Amid National Party Turmoil
Nigeria’s political landscape took a dramatic turn on Monday night after Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)—the party that launched his rise from senator to state governor.
Adeleke made his exit public in a post on his official X account, attaching a resignation letter dated November 4, 2025.
The letter, addressed to the PDP Chairman of Ward 2 in Sagba Abogunde, Ede North, confirmed that the ward leadership had already acknowledged receipt.
In the letter, Adeleke attributed his decision to the deepening crisis within the PDP’s national leadership, a turmoil that has fractured the party for months and triggered a wave of defections across Nigeria.
“Due to the current crisis of the national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), I hereby resign my membership… with immediate effect,” he wrote.
Adeleke expressed appreciation to the party that propelled him into national visibility, first as Senator representing Osun West between 2017 and 2019, and later as the state’s governor after his 2022 election victory over then-incumbent Gboyega Oyetola.
Despite confirming his resignation, Adeleke offered no hint about the political party he intends to join next, leaving Nigeria’s political observers guessing as the 2026 Osun governorship race slowly gathers steam.
His departure marks one of the most significant political shake-ups in Osun State in recent years and adds to the mounting pressure on the PDP, which has recently lost lawmakers and key figures to rival parties amid ongoing internal disputes.
Adeleke’s move now fuels speculation about his next political home, and how it might reshape alliances ahead of upcoming national and state elections.
