Nigeria Reports Bandit Attack as Community Guard Is Killed and Residents Abducted
Armed bandits stormed Sabon Birni in Sokoto State, northwestern Nigeria, killing a member of the local community security outfit and abducting several residents during a late-night attack.
The assault occurred on Monday night in Sabon Birni Local Government Area, a region that has repeatedly experienced violent raids linked to armed groups operating across parts of the northwest.
A member of the Sokoto Community Guards was killed during the attack, while several residents were taken away by the assailants.
Authorities say the exact number of abducted persons has not yet been confirmed.
A lawmaker representing the area in the Sokoto State House of Assembly, Hon. Aminu Boza, confirmed the incident but said it remains difficult to determine the full scale of the abduction due to confusion during the raid.
He explained that some residents may have fled into surrounding bushes, making early verification of figures challenging.
A resident who spoke anonymously said about 10 people were abducted, noting that the community has faced repeated attacks in recent times. The attackers were also said to have used a familiar route previously linked to earlier raids.
The incident reportedly occurred around Kantin Gabas, near the town’s Eid prayer ground.
Security agencies say investigations are ongoing as they continue to gather details.
The attack adds to ongoing insecurity concerns in Nigeria’s northwest, where rural communities continue to face repeated killings, kidnappings, and armed incursions.
