NUT Declares Strike, Plans Nationwide Rallies Over Oyo Abductions
The Nigeria Union of Teachers has ordered an indefinite strike in Oyo State. The action follows the abduction of teachers and students in Oriire Local Government Area.
The union directed all public school teachers in the state to withdraw services. It said the decision takes effect from June 1.
Nigeria Union of Teachers described the situation as traumatic and unbearable. It said the victims have remained in captivity since May 15.
The union also announced nationwide solidarity rallies. It directed all state chapters to mobilise for Tuesday’s protest action.
The rallies are expected to end at government houses across the country. Leaders will demand stronger action on school security.
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde urged caution over the planned protests. He said demonstrations could disrupt rescue efforts.
Makinde appealed for prayers for the safe return of the victims. Nigeria authorities say security agencies are working to secure their release.
