One Dead, 8 Rescued as Three- Storey Building Collapses in Ajegunle
One person has been confirmed dead, while eight others were rescued after a three-storey building with a penthouse collapsed during demolition at 28, Baale Alayabiagba Street, Alayabiagba Community, Ajegunle, Apapa area of Lagos.
The Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed the incident in a preliminary situation report issued on Thursday in Lagos.
Oke-Osanyintolu said that the building, which was undergoing manual demolition, collapsed at about 11:09 a.m., trapping several workers under the rubble.
“Upon arrival of the Agency’s response team, it was observed that a three-storey building with a penthouse undergoing manual demolition had collapsed, trapping some workers.
“Eight adult males were rescued alive, while one adult male was recovered dead from the rubble,” he said.
He said the injured victims were administered first aid by the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) before being taken to Ajeromi General Hospital for further treatment.
According to him, coordinated search and rescue operations are ongoing at the scene, with responders ensuring proper management and safety.
Agencies present at the scene include LASEMA, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC), LASAMBUS, Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and the Nigeria Police Force.
“Search and rescue operations are still ongoing to ensure that all victims are accounted for,” Oke-Osanyintolu added.
