Ronaldo at 40 : Portuguese Icon Becomes All-Time Top Scorer in World Cup Qualifiers
Portuguese football legend Cristiano Ronaldo has once again rewritten the record books, becoming the highest goalscorer in World Cup qualifying history after netting twice against Hungary on Tuesday night. At 40 years old, Ronaldo’s hunger for goals and glory remains unmatched, as he continues to defy both age and expectation on football’s biggest stage.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner scored his 40th and 41st goals in World Cup qualifiers, surpassing the long-standing record held by retired Guatemalan striker Carlos Ruiz, who notched 39 goals between 1998 and 2016. With this feat, Ronaldo has added yet another remarkable chapter to a career that has already seen him become the all-time leading scorer in men’s international football, with 143 goals for Portugal.
Tuesday’s match at Lisbon’s Estádio da Luz was meant to be a routine World Cup qualifier for Portugal, but it turned into another historic night for their captain. After Hungary took a shock lead in the 16th minute, Ronaldo levelled the score just six minutes later, converting a precise cross from Nelson Semedo with his trademark poise and power. His finish, a deft strike past the Hungarian goalkeeper Péter Gulácsi, reignited the home crowd and restored belief among the Portuguese supporters.
Before halftime, Ronaldo struck again — this time finishing off a clever pass from left-back Nuno Mendes to give Portugal a 2–1 lead. His celebration, a familiar leap followed by his iconic “Siiuu” shout, echoed around the stadium, marking yet another milestone in a career defined by records, passion, and relentless pursuit of excellence.
However, the night ended on a bittersweet note for Portugal. A dramatic stoppage-time equaliser from Hungary’s star midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai denied Roberto Martínez’s side the victory that would have sealed automatic qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The match finished 2–2, leaving Portugal still in need of a point from their next fixture to secure their spot at the tournament, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
Speaking after the game, Ronaldo expressed pride in his achievement but emphasised that the team’s goals remain paramount. “Records come naturally when you give everything for your country,” he told reporters. “I’m proud, of course, but what matters most is helping Portugal reach the World Cup and compete at the highest level. That has always been my dream.”
Ronaldo’s latest milestone reinforces his remarkable longevity in international football. Having made his debut for Portugal in 2003, he has now played across three decades, leading his nation through five World Cups (2006, 2010, 2014, 2018, and 2022) and four European Championships. If he fulfils his stated ambition to appear at the 2026 World Cup, he will become the first player in history to feature in six editions of the tournament — a testament to his discipline, fitness, and sheer determination.
Football analysts have long run out of superlatives to describe Ronaldo’s career. From his early days at Sporting Lisbon to his glittering spells with Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus, and Al Nassr, the Portuguese forward has consistently adapted his style while maintaining a lethal scoring instinct. His ability to perform at the highest level well into his forties has drawn admiration even from his critics.
“Cristiano is not just a player — he’s an institution,” said former Portugal teammate Ricardo Carvalho. “He’s redefined what it means to be a professional athlete. His mentality and work ethic are extraordinary.”
Though Portugal missed the chance to confirm their World Cup place, Ronaldo’s performance offered yet another reminder of his enduring greatness. For a man whose career has been built on breaking boundaries and setting new standards, becoming the top scorer in World Cup qualifying history is not merely another record — it is proof that even at 40, Cristiano Ronaldo’s story is far from over.
