A strategic town in the central region of Somalia is said to have been captured by Al-Shabaab militants.

Amara residents told local media that the Islamic militants stormed an army base before taking over the town.

Authorities say several armoured vehicles have been captured while some were set ablaze by insurgents in early hours of today.

Amara town was early this month repossessed by the Somali military after being under the al-Shabab control for a decade period.

Al-Shabaab remain in control of some parts of southern and central Somalia and continue to launch attacks on government-held regions.
