Stars, Clerics and Dignitaries Gather in Lagos for Emotional Farewell Tribute to Alex Ekubo

Lagos witnessed an outpouring of grief and solidarity as Nollywood stars, religious leaders, and prominent public figures gathered for the service of songs held in honour of late actor Alex Ekubo.

The solemn event took place on Wednesday, June 10, at the Monarch Event Centre in the Lekki area of Lagos State, drawing a wide mix of mourners from Nigeria’s entertainment industry, political space, and religious circles.

The ceremony reflected the depth of Ekubo’s influence in Nollywood, as colleagues and admirers came together to pay tribute to his life and career following his death on May 11, 2026, after a prolonged battle with advanced kidney cancer.

Among those in attendance were top Nollywood personalities including Funke Akindele, Ini Edo, Kate Henshaw, Omoni Oboli, Nancy Isime, Ruth Kadiri, Stan Nze, Kunle Remi, Mike Godson, and comedian AY, alongside several other industry figures.

The event also drew former Minister of Education Oby Ezekwesili, as well as media personality Frank Edoho, adding to the diverse gathering of mourners who came to honour the late actor.

Religious leaders played a central role in the ceremony, with Pastor Ituah Ighodalo and Pastor Jerry Eze ministering to the congregation, supported by gospel artistes such as Moses Bliss, Mercy Chinwo, Peterson Okopi, Ebuka Songs, and the Laud Urban Choir, who led worship sessions in an emotional atmosphere.

Attendees described the gathering as a moment of reflection on Ekubo’s life, career, and the legacy he leaves behind in Nigeria’s film industry, where he was widely admired for his screen presence and versatility.

The actor is scheduled to be laid to rest in his hometown, Ujari Village in Abia State, on June 18, 2026, where family, colleagues, and fans are expected to hold a final farewell.
