Tensions Flare at UN After Unexpected US Protest

A United States delegation staged an unexpected protest during a United Nations Security Council meeting on Monday, walking out as France’s ambassador addressed members in a dramatic display of growing diplomatic friction between the two countries.

The walkout occurred during an emergency session on the war in Ukraine. American officials later confirmed that the move was a direct response to remarks made by France following a recent United Nations vote on the future of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

The disagreement began after the UN General Assembly voted on whether to extend the mandate of Volker Türk.

While 144 member states supported his reappointment, the United States voted against it alongside Russia and North Korea.

France openly criticised Washington after the vote, arguing that the United States had aligned itself with countries it has long accused of violating human rights.

The French mission to the UN also suggested America had drifted from its traditional role as a champion of human rights.

The criticism was swiftly rejected by US officials. Ambassador Mike Waltz defended Washington’s position, accusing Türk of directing disproportionate criticism at democratic nations while failing to challenge some of the world’s worst human rights offenders with equal resolve.

Volker Türk has frequently commented on international crises, including Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the conflict in Gaza, positions that have drawn mixed reactions from governments around the world.

US Ambassador Dan Negrea said Monday’s walkout was a deliberate signal that Washington would not ignore what it viewed as France’s disrespectful rhetoric.

The incident comes amid broader disagreements between President Donald Trump’s administration and the United Nations.

Since returning to office, the administration has scaled back support for several UN agencies and withdrawn from a number of UN bodies, insisting the organisation has become increasingly politicised.

US Ambassador Jeff Bartos also warned that Washington would reassess its future engagement with the United Nations, including its financial contributions and level of participation.

France, however, stood firmly behind Türk, with Ambassador Jérôme Bonnafont describing the human rights chief as an independent and credible voice whose work continues to enjoy the confidence of most UN member states.

The United Nations declined to comment on the diplomatic dispute, saying only that it expects member states to respect resolutions adopted by the General Assembly.
