TikToker Jailed for Six Years for Insulting Ugandan President

Edward Awebwa, a 24-year-old Ugandan TikToker, was sentenced to six years in prison for posting “misleading and malicious” content about President Yoweri Museveni, his wife, and their son.

Despite pleading guilty, Awebwa showed no remorse, leading Judge Stella Maris Amabilis to emphasize the need for respect towards the president and his family. The sentence was intended as a deterrent against disrespectful behavior.

This case reflects Uganda’s ongoing crackdown on dissent, with similar instances involving other critics of the government, such as writer Kakwenza Rukirabashaija and activist Stella Nyanzi. Uganda continues to face criticism from NGOs over human rights violations and suppression of free speech.
