On this day in 1977, JVC introduced its VHS videotape at the Consumer Electronics Show in Chicago. It will eventually prevail against Sony’s rival Betamax system in a format war to become the predominant home video medium.

Still on this day in 1920, Hungary lost 71% of its territory and 63% of its population when the Treaty of Trianon is signed in Paris.

Today in history has it that on this day in 1928, the President of the Republic of China, Zhang Zuolin, is assassinated by Japanese agents.

Again, on this day in 1915, Modibo Keïta was born to life. Today in History reveals that he was a Malian educator and politician, 1st President of Mali. However, he died in 1977.

According to Today in History, it was on this day in 1979, Flight Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings led a group of junior military officers to overthrow the Supreme Military Council (SMC II) dictatorship in Ghana.

Again on this day in 1996, Alhaja Kudirat Abiola, the prominent pro-democracy activist and wife of detained billionaire presidential claimant Moshood “MKO” Abiola, was brutally assassinated in Lagos. She was shot by gunmen near the 7-Up Depot in Ikejahile aggressively campaigning for the release of her husband and the restoration of his annulled June 12, 1993 presidential mandate. Her death turned her into a permanent martyr for Nigerian democracy.
