UMass ‘Chef of the Year’ Accused of Killing Wife in Campus Hotel Horror
A chef once celebrated for his culinary brilliance at the University of Massachusetts Amherst is now facing allegations that have stunned the campus community and far beyond.
Jeffrey MacDonald, who was honoured as UMass Amherst’s 2025 “Chef of the Year,” has been charged in connection with the death of his wife, Emma MacDonald, whose body was discovered inside a room at the university’s Campus Center hotel on Wednesday night.
Police were called to the hotel shortly before 8 p.m. after reports of an emergency. When officers arrived, investigators say they encountered a chaotic and violent scene.
MacDonald allegedly resisted arrest, throwing objects and striking one of the responding officers before he was subdued.
Inside Room 413, officers found 31-year-old Emma unresponsive. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to court documents, MacDonald later told investigators that he had intentionally attacked his wife. Authorities said the nature of her injuries indicated an extremely violent assault.
The arrest has sent shockwaves across the university, where both Jeffrey and Emma worked.
Only nine months ago, MacDonald was being applauded for his culinary excellence after receiving national recognition from the American Culinary Federation.
His award had been hailed as a landmark achievement, celebrating his skill, leadership and dedication to the profession.
Now, that accolade stands in stark contrast to the allegations against him.
In a message to staff and students, University of Massachusetts Amherst Chancellor Javier Reyes described the tragedy as heartbreaking and deeply unsettling, while assuring the campus community that there was no ongoing threat.
MacDonald appeared in court on Thursday, where he pleaded not guilty to charges including first-degree murder and assaulting a police officer.
He is being held without bail, and his next court appearance is scheduled for May 22.
His attorney has also requested a competency evaluation.
A man once praised for his artistry in the kitchen now finds himself at the centre of a case that has left an entire community struggling to comprehend how acclaim could so suddenly give way to catastrophe.
