US–Iran Talks in Switzerland Collapse as Israel–Hezbollah Clashes Intensify in Lebanon

A planned round of US–Iran talks in Switzerland has been called off at the last minute, as fighting between Israel and Hezbollah escalated sharply in southern Lebanon.

The meeting, expected to take place in the Swiss village of Obbürgen, was part of a wider diplomatic push linked to a proposed framework on Iran’s nuclear programme and regional security arrangements, including stability in the Strait of Hormuz.

The White House confirmed the cancellation, saying Vice President JD Vance would no longer travel to the summit.

Officials said his delegation had been preparing to depart before the decision was abruptly reversed due to fast-moving developments.

The discussions were meant to follow a recent memorandum of understanding that opened a 60-day window for negotiations toward a more lasting agreement between Washington and Tehran.

But the diplomatic effort was overtaken by renewed violence in southern Lebanon, where Israel and Hezbollah exchanged heavy fire in one of the most intense escalations since a fragile ceasefire arrangement.

Hezbollah launched rocket attacks targeting Israeli positions near Nabatieh, while Israel responded with airstrikes across several towns in southern Lebanon. Lebanese authorities said at least 16 people were killed and dozens injured in the strikes.

Both sides accused each other of violating existing ceasefire understandings, with Israel saying Hezbollah attacks triggered its response, while Hezbollah insisted it was acting against advancing Israeli forces.

In Washington, officials said they still hope diplomatic engagement can resume soon, describing the cancellation as a setback but not the end of the process.

However, they acknowledged that negotiations remain highly sensitive to developments on the ground.

Iranian officials also indicated uncertainty, saying further talks would depend on whether earlier agreements were being implemented.

Tehran has repeatedly warned against continued military escalation during the negotiation window.

The renewed fighting has further complicated an already fragile regional situation, with multiple fronts of conflict stretching across Lebanon and northern Israel, and mounting casualties on both sides.

Diplomats warn that the sudden collapse of the meeting highlights how quickly ceasefire diplomacy can unravel when battlefield tensions intensify.
