Jimmy Swaggart, the renowned American televangelist, has passed away at the age of 90. His death was confirmed through a post on his official Facebook page on Tuesday.
Swaggart reportedly died two weeks after suffering a cardiac arrest at his home in Louisiana on June 15, 2025.
Once one of the most recognized Pentecostal preachers in the United States, Swaggart’s career was marred by scandal in the late 1980s. In 1988, he was caught on camera with a prostitute in New Orleans, which came after a public feud with fellow preacher Marvin Gorman. Swaggart had accused Gorman of infidelity, and in retaliation, Gorman hired a private investigator who captured Swaggart in a compromising situation.
The incident sparked a national scandal, leading Swaggart to temporarily step down from preaching. In a tearful sermon later that year, Swaggart addressed the controversy and apologized to his congregation, saying, “I have sinned against you. I beg you to forgive me.”
Though his ministry continued for decades after the scandal, his audience was significantly reduced.
