Zambia Needs Collective Action Against Cholera

Zambia stands at a critical juncture in the face of a relentless cholera outbreak, demanding both swift and collective action from the government and its citizens. President Hakainde Hichilema’s call for mass relocation to rural areas is a stark acknowledgment of the urgent need to address the root causes of the outbreak. However, this crisis demands a more comprehensive approach.

The government, in its pursuit of eradicating cholera, must prioritize upgrading existing slums in towns and preventing the emergence of new ones. While relocation to villages is presented as a solution, the challenge lies in ensuring these rural areas are equipped to accommodate an influx of residents, providing not just space but also sustainable sanitation infrastructure.

Moreover, the Zambian government should focus on proactive measures to improve urban planning and infrastructure, ensuring that towns can handle their populations without becoming breeding grounds for waterborne diseases. This includes investing in sanitation facilities, proper waste management, and accessible clean water sources.

On the citizens’ front, there is a collective responsibility to embrace hygienic practices and advocate for improved living conditions. President Hichilema’s critique of citizens moving to towns “without a clear objective” raises valid points about urbanization challenges. However, a balanced approach involves not just urging relocation but also creating opportunities and improving conditions in both urban and rural settings.

Public awareness campaigns are crucial to educate citizens about cholera prevention, the importance of clean water, and the significance of proper sanitation. Empowering communities with knowledge can instigate a behavioral shift, fostering a culture of hygiene and resilience against waterborne diseases.

The international community must also play a role in supporting Zambia’s fight against cholera. Humanitarian aid, technical expertise, and collaborative efforts are essential to bring about sustainable change and overcome the immediate crisis.

In the face of a health emergency, unity is paramount. The Zambian government, citizens, and global partners must work together to enact meaningful and lasting change. As the cholera outbreak persists, the call for action echoes not only in the words of leaders but in the actions taken collectively to safeguard the health and well-being of the nation.
