Mohammed Amin Adam, Ghana’s Finance Minister, has apologized for the economic difficulties caused by the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP). His apology follows calls from members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to acknowledge economic management errors.
During a town hall meeting in Accra on August 6, 2024, Dr. Amin Adam explained the necessity of the DDEP to stabilize the economy. “We decided to restructure our debts because it was one of the requirements by the IMF. The DDEP was a very successful programme, achieving 95% participation. And on this note, I would like to appeal to the people of Ghana to forgive us,” he said, as reported by myjoyonline.com.
He stressed that the government did not intend to impose hardships and that the DDEP was crucial for economic recovery. “If we had avoided it, our economy would not recover as it has recovered today. The support you gave us during the DDEP has contributed largely to the recovery our economy is seeing today,” Dr. Amin Adam added.
He thanked Ghanaians for their sacrifices, acknowledging their role in the country’s economic recovery.
