A military court in the Democratic Republic of Congo has sentenced 25 people, including Corneille Nangaa, leader of the rebel coalition Alliance Fleuve Congo (AFC), to death after a high-profile trial. Nangaa, convicted of war crimes, insurrection, and treason, was tried in absentia alongside 19 other fugitives. From an undisclosed location, Nangaa stated, “This nauseating judicial saga reinforces our struggle for democratic normality in Congo.”
The AFC, formed by Nangaa, includes the M23, a group implicated in mass killings. The court’s decision follows a fragile ceasefire between Congo and Rwanda, with experts suggesting the death sentence might influence future negotiations. The ongoing conflict in eastern Congo has displaced millions, creating a severe humanitarian crisis.
