The Kenyan Senate has impeached Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, the first deputy president in the country to face such a consequence. The vote occurred on Thursday, despite a plea from Gachagua’s lawyer for a postponement due to the deputy president’s hospitalization. Senate Speaker Amason Kingi had previously mandated Gachagua’s appearance, which he failed to meet.
Of the 11 charges against him, Gachagua was impeached on five counts, including undermining judicial independence and gross misconduct linked to public criticisms of national security services. His remarks about the intelligence agency’s handling of protests against tax increases were seen as a challenge to President William Ruto’s authority.
The motion to remove him garnered 281 votes in favor and only 44 against, reflecting deepening political divisions within the Kenyan government.
