The Ghanaian Ministry of the Interior has officially announced the temporary closure of all land borders in preparation for the country’s general elections on December 7, 2024. In a statement released earlier today, the Ministry emphasized that this measure is being implemented to ensure the smooth conduct of the elections and to safeguard the democratic process.
“The closure of the land borders is crucial to maintaining security and order during this critical time,” said Henry Quartey, the Minister for the Interior. “We urge all citizens and travelers to cooperate with the security agencies enforcing this directive.”
The closure will take effect immediately and is set to remain in place until 6:00 PM on Sunday, December 8, 2024. This decision is part of a broader effort to prevent any disruptions during the elections and to ensure that the process remains free from external influences.
While it’s clear that this move is intended to protect the integrity of the elections, one can’t ignore the inconvenience it may cause for travelers, especially those with urgent cross-border needs. However, given the importance of maintaining a peaceful and credible election, the temporary closure is a necessary precaution. It’s a balancing act between security and accessibility, but in this case, prioritizing national stability seems to be the right call.
