Rwandan President Paul Kagame announced Rwanda’s bid to host a Formula One race during the opening of the FIA General Assembly in Kigali on Friday. The event, held in Africa for the first time, underscores the continent’s growing ambition in global motorsports.
Kagame emphasized the significance of hosting the assembly, calling it a milestone in connecting the motorsport industry with African fans and aspiring drivers. “In a world where various forces are pushing us apart, the values of sportsmanship should bring us closer together,” he stated.
Rwanda’s bid comes as Formula One explores expansion into new markets. Kagame’s push highlights Rwanda’s strategic positioning as an emerging hub for international events and tourism. It also reflects broader African efforts to gain representation in the sport.
The announcement coincided with the awards ceremony crowning Max Verstappen as Formula One champion for the fourth consecutive year. The event in Kigali celebrated global motorsport achievements while spotlighting Africa’s potential role in the industry.
If successful, Rwanda would join the exclusive roster of countries hosting Formula One races, marking a significant milestone for African motorsport and boosting the country’s international profile. The bid aligns with Kagame’s vision of fostering unity and opportunity through global sports.
