The Nigerian Senate has officially endorsed President Bola Tinubu’s state of emergency declaration in Rivers State. This decision was made after a closed-door session on Thursday, where lawmakers discussed the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy Ngozi Odu, and other key state officials.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio initiated the session by reading a letter from President Tinubu. Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele proposed the private meeting, which was seconded by Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro. After deliberations, a voice vote was called, and the state of emergency was approved.

Akpabio explained the rationale behind the decision, stating, “We are taking this action in full alignment with Section 305(2) of the Constitution.

We anticipate that the President’s declaration will bring peace and stability to Rivers State, addressing the ongoing crisis that has affected the people.”

He further added, “The Senate supports the President’s efforts to ensure security and restore order in the state.”

The Senate also urged President Tinubu to establish an ad hoc committee composed of distinguished Nigerians to help mediate between the warring parties in Rivers.

“This committee will serve as a neutral body to ensure that the people of Rivers State are heard and that the path to peace is clearly defined,” Akpabio remarked.

Akpabio also emphasized the flexibility of the situation, noting, “The President has the authority to reassess and lift the state of emergency either at his discretion or within six months, based on the situation on the ground.”

Additionally, the Senate resolved to form a joint ad hoc committee with members from both the Senate and the House of Representatives to oversee the emergency’s implementation.

Akpabio concluded, “This is a critical time for Rivers State, and we are committed to ensuring that the actions taken are in the best interest of its people.”
