Kenya stamped its dominance on the maiden edition of the Enugu City International Marathon, with Koros Ken and Shauline Chepkiru Koech emerging victorious in the men’s and women’s categories, respectively.
Ken, who led a field of over a hundred elite international athletes, crossed the finish line first to claim the $15,000 grand prize. Following closely was fellow Kenyan Steve Rasway, who earned $10,000 for second place. Bernard Sang, another top Kenyan runner and former Access Bank Lagos City Marathon champion, finished third and received $5,000.
In the women’s race, it was an all-Kenyan affair as Shauline Chepkiru Koech claimed top honors, further highlighting Kenya’s long-distance running prowess.
Among the Nigerian contingent, Davou Ezekiel from Jos was the standout performer. He finished as the top local athlete and was awarded a three million Naira prize reserved for indigenous competitors.
The marathon lived up to its billing as a world-class event, drawing thousands of spectators and local participants. Governor Peter Mbah, who joined the 10km fun run, praised the organization and spirit of the event.
“This race has shown us the power of sports in uniting and inspiring our youth,” Mbah said. “I’m impressed by what I’ve seen and even more committed to making next year’s edition bigger and better.”
