Mali’s transitional President Assimi Goita has survived a Tuesday knife attack in the capital, Bamako.

The Presidency has said in a statement that Goita is “safe and sound” after a knife armed attacker lunged at him during Eid prayers at the Grande Mosque in Bamako.

Local media reported that Col Goita was attacked after he joined other worshipers for Eid ul-Adha prayers.

The Presidency added that the alleged attacker was immediately arrested minutes after the president was rushed to a military baracks in the outskirts of Bamako.

Government has described the attack as an attempt at President Goita’s life.
