Senegal Probes Team Doctor’s Background as World Cup Fallout Deepens
Senegal’s post-World Cup review has taken a dramatic turn after the country’s football federation revealed that the national team’s long-serving doctor was originally trained as a gynaecologist, triggering a fresh wave of debate over the squad’s medical support.

The revelation has intensified scrutiny of the Teranga Lions’ disappointing campaign in North America, where the reigning African champions failed to live up to expectations.
Speaking on the development, Senegal Football Federation (FSF) President Abdoulaye Fall said concerns about the team’s medical care were raised by members of the squad during the tournament.
According to him, federation officials only became fully aware of the doctor’s primary medical background late in the competition.
Fall said the discovery prompted the federation to engage independent medical experts to reassure players and strengthen confidence in the team’s healthcare arrangements.

He maintained that the welfare of the players remains the federation’s foremost responsibility, adding that every effort was made to ensure they received the best possible medical attention.
However, the Senegalese Association of Sports Medicine has strongly rejected the federation’s claims, describing them as inaccurate and unfair.
The association defended Dr. Abderahmane Fediore, stating that while he initially specialized in gynaecology, he later obtained advanced qualifications in sports medicine and sports biology from the Faculty of Medicine at Cheikh Anta Diop University.

It further noted that Fediore is no stranger to elite sports medicine, having previously headed the physiotherapy department at Fann Hospital before taking over as Senegal’s team doctor in 2017.
During his tenure, he has accompanied the national team to three FIFA World Cups and five Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, with no previous concerns publicly raised about his professional competence.
The medical controversy comes amid sweeping changes within Senegalese football. The federation recently dismissed head coach Pape Bouna Thiaw and his entire backroom staff after reviewing the team’s disappointing World Cup performance.
Thiaw, who assumed the role in 2024, paid the price for the team’s early exit despite Senegal entering the tournament as one of Africa’s strongest contenders following their Africa Cup of Nations triumph over Morocco.
After opening the tournament with defeats to France and Norway, Senegal revived their hopes by beating Iraq to reach the Round of 32.
However, the Teranga Lions suffered a painful exit after throwing away a two-goal lead against Belgium and eventually losing 3-2 after extra time.

With the coaching staff gone and questions now surrounding the team’s medical setup, Senegal’s football authorities face mounting pressure to restore confidence and rebuild ahead of future international competitions.
