Latest Updates on the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifying Matches

Egypt’s bid to qualify early for the 2026 FIFA World Cup hit a setback after a goalless draw against Burkina Faso on Tuesday, leaving them with more work to do in the final two games.

So far, Morocco and Tunisia are the only African nations to have officially secured their places at next summer’s tournament, wrapping up qualification with strong performances.

Group C leaders South Africa also came close to booking their spot but were held to a 1-1 draw by Nigeria. The result leaves the Super Eagles in danger of missing out on a second consecutive World Cup appearance, despite being six-time participants.

Cape Verde delivered the biggest shock of the round, defeating Cameroon 1-0 in Praia. The victory marked their fifth consecutive win and ensured they stayed top of Group D with 19 points, sparking wild celebrations and a pitch invasion.

In Kinshasa, Senegal showed their championship pedigree by coming from behind to edge the Democratic Republic of Congo 3-2, keeping their grip on Group B.

Ivory Coast remain leaders in Group F after a 0-0 stalemate with Gabon, though their margin at the top has been cut to just a single point.

On the individual front, Gabon’s Denis Bouanga leads the scoring chart with eight goals, closely followed by Egypt’s Mohamed Salah.

This latest round of qualifiers highlighted the drama of African football, with traditional giants stumbling, underdogs rising, and the race to North America 2026 promising even more twists.
