“Nigeria Alone Had 4 Million More Births Than the Entire EU Last Year!” — Musk
Billionaire businessman and Tesla Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk has reignited concerns over Europe’s declining birth rate, drawing attention to Nigeria’s growing population as a striking point of comparison.
In a post on X on Friday, Musk claimed that Nigeria recorded four million more births than the entire European Union in 2025, arguing that the figures reflect the widening demographic gap between Africa’s most populous nation and much of Europe.

Musk has repeatedly warned that persistently low fertility rates could have serious long-term consequences for Europe, maintaining that shrinking populations threaten economic growth and the future of civilisation.
Reinforcing that position, he shared an infographic originally posted by an X user identified as Giga Based Dad, which argued that Europe was on course for a demographic decline unless birth rates improve.
Replying to the post, Musk wrote:
“Either Europe starts having large families or it will keep dying.”
The infographic, credited to geo.universe, presented fertility rate estimates for European countries and suggested that many nations remain below the level needed to sustain their populations.
It defined fertility rate as the expected number of children born to a woman during her child-bearing years based on 2024 estimates.
The chart further described countries with fewer than one expected birth per woman as having an “extremely low” fertility rate, while those averaging about 1.5 children per woman were classified as having an “insufficient” birth rate.
Musk has consistently argued that reversing the decline in birth rates should become a priority for many developed nations, warning that continued population decline could reshape societies in the decades ahead.
