TODAY IN HISTORY – 3rd Nov 2025 – African World News

American author, John Jay Chapman says “one of the deepest impulses in man is the impulse to record, to scratch a drawing on a tusk or keep a diary… The enduring value of the past is, one might say, the very basis of civilisation.”

 

Looking at that quote, Today in History believes that humans have an inherent desire to document and preserve their experiences, thoughts, and stories. This impulse to record history is a fundamental aspect of human nature.

In essence, key takeaways here are preserving and valuing history is essential to building and sustaining a civilized society.

 

Take a look at some of these events in the past

On this day in 1793, French playwright, journalist and feminist Olympe de Gouges was guillotined.

It was on this day in 1817 that the Bank of Montreal, Canada’s oldest chartered bank, opened and in Montreal.

According to Today in History, on this day in 1838, the Times of India, the world’s largest circulated English language daily broadsheet newspaper is founded as The Bombay Times and Journal of Commerce.

Still on this day in 1911, Chevrolet officially entered the automobile market in competition with the Ford Model T.

Again, on this day in 2014, One World Trade Center officially opened in New York City, replacing the Twin Towers after they were destroyed during the September 11 attacks.

Again, the remarkable South African novelist and essayist who was born in the year of our Lord, 1931, Lauretta Ngcobo died on this day in 2015.
