Genevieve Nnaji Fires Back At Tweet Urging Igbo Men To Shun Igbo Women
Nollywood icon Genevieve Nnaji has sharply condemned a viral post on X that advised Igbo men to avoid marrying women from their own ethnic group.
The controversial tweet claimed that Igbo men risk being falsely accused of raping their daughters by Igbo wives and suggested they “look to East Africa, especially Rwanda,” for marriage instead.
The post immediately sparked outrage across social media, with many tagging it as irresponsible and harmful.
Nnaji, who hails from Mbaise in Imo State, did not mince words in her response. She criticised the tweet for promoting avoidance instead of accountability.
“In other words, instead of checking yourself and taking responsibility, go for the unsuspecting and carry on with your evil. Got it,” she wrote.
While some users attempted to defend the original post, arguing that it targeted “false accusers” and not Igbo women as a whole, Nnaji remained firm, warning against any narrative that paints an entire group with one brush.
“The same way a woman can’t instantly tell an abusive man from a good one is the same way you shouldn’t say avoid all Igbo women. Not all women,” she added.
The exchange has reignited conversations about stereotypes, gender-based assumptions, and the dangers of using social media to generalise sensitive issues.y
