FIFA Blasts Senegal Over AFCON Final Walkout, Says Chaos Has No Place in Football

World football’s governing body, FIFA, has come down hard on Senegal following dramatic scenes that nearly forced the abandonment of the Africa Cup of Nations final in Morocco, describing the conduct of some players and supporters as unacceptable and damaging to the image of the sport.

The controversy unfolded late in the final on Sunday with the score tied at 0–0. A Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review awarded Morocco a penalty after winger Brahim Diaz was fouled inside the box, a decision that sparked outrage among the Senegalese players.

In protest, several members of the Senegal squad and technical crew walked off the pitch, refusing to continue the match.

The standoff quickly spilled into the stands as agitated fans attempted to invade the field, leading to clashes with security officials and forcing match organisers to suspend play for close to 20 minutes.

Amid the confusion, former Liverpool forward Sadio Mané stood his ground on the pitch, repeatedly urging his teammates to return and allow the match to resume.

Reacting to the scenes, FIFA President Gianni Infantino issued a stern condemnation, insisting that such behaviour has no place in the modern game.

He said FIFA strongly disapproves of any form of pitch invasion, intimidation of match officials or refusal to continue play, stressing that respect for referees is a cornerstone of football.

After order was eventually restored, Morocco’s Diaz stepped up to take the penalty, but Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy produced a superb save to keep his side in the contest.

The final then went into extra time, where midfielder Pape Gueye struck the winning goal to hand Senegal a dramatic 1–0 victory and their second AFCON title.

Despite lifting the trophy, Senegal’s celebrations have been overshadowed by the disorder that marred the closing moments of regulation time.

FIFA, while praising Morocco for hosting what it described as an outstanding tournament, warned that footballers must act as role models — particularly with the 2026 World Cup on the horizon.

The world body has also called on the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to investigate the incident and apply appropriate sanctions where necessary.

What should have been a night remembered purely for footballing excellence has now become a reminder of how quickly emotions can boil over, and why discipline, respect and sportsmanship remain non-negotiable in the global game.
