Kenya Moves to Halt Recruitment of Its Citizens in Russia-Ukraine Conflict

Kenya has launched diplomatic efforts to stop the recruitment of its nationals to fight in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.

On Sunday, Kenya’s Foreign Minister Musalia Mudavadi departed for Moscow, where he is scheduled to meet with senior Russian officials, including Sergey Lavrov, the Russian foreign minister, on Monday and Tuesday, according to a statement from Kenya’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The mission aims to secure the repatriation of Kenyans who were reportedly lured to Russia with promises of well-paying civilian jobs, only to find themselves forced onto the battlefield.

Kenyan intelligence estimates that more than 1,000 of its citizens have died after being recruited under such circumstances, a figure cited in a recent report reviewed by AFP.

Kenya has expressed deep concern over the use of its citizens in foreign conflicts, emphasizing the government’s responsibility to protect its nationals and prevent further casualties.

Mudavadi’s visit underscores Nairobi’s determination to engage Russia directly to safeguard its people and ensure their safe return.

The diplomatic initiative also highlights the broader risks facing foreign nationals who are recruited into conflicts under false pretenses, as Kenya seeks both immediate protection for those stranded and longer-term measures to prevent similar exploitation.
