Nigeria Church Attack Fallout Deepens as Christian Leaders Dispute Army’s Rescue Claim in Kaduna
Tension is mounting in Nigeria after conflicting accounts surfaced over a deadly church attack in Kaduna State, with Christian leaders openly challenging the military’s claim that kidnapped worshippers were rescued.
The Nigerian Army had stated that troops successfully freed several victims following an assault by gunmen on a church in Ariko village, Kachia Local Government Area.
The attack reportedly left multiple people dead, underscoring the persistent insecurity in parts of northern Nigeria.
But the narrative quickly unraveled after the northern leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) rejected the army’s version of events.
Chairman Reverend John Joseph Hayab maintained that those abducted during the attack are still in captivity, stressing that no verified rescue has taken place.
He warned that announcing unconfirmed victories could be counterproductive, creating misinformation and potentially giving armed groups an advantage while families continue to wait anxiously for their loved ones.
Community voices from Ariko have backed the church leaders’ position. A local development association described the military’s claim as inaccurate and misleading, insisting that the reality on the ground tells a different story.
A former village head also disputed the official casualty figures, revealing that more victims had been buried than initially reported.
Despite the growing controversy, there has been no immediate response from military authorities to address the contradictions.
The incident highlights ongoing concerns about security operations and information management in Nigeria, particularly in regions like Kaduna where attacks, kidnappings, and violent raids remain frequent.
It also reflects a broader pattern of disputed accounts between local communities and security agencies, raising questions about transparency and trust in official communications.
As uncertainty lingers, affected families and residents are left grappling with grief, fear, and unanswered questions over the true fate of those taken during the attack.
