Nigeria Presidency Fires Back as ADC Crisis Deepens Around Peter Obi, Clears Tinubu of Any Role

The Nigerian Presidency has pushed back strongly against claims linking President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the growing crisis surrounding Peter Obi and the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing the allegations as baseless and politically motivated.

In a statement released on Monday, presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga said the President has no involvement in Obi’s political decisions or the internal struggles currently rocking the party.

He questioned why Tinubu continues to be blamed for issues that, according to him, have no connection to his administration.

Onanuga argued that Obi’s present challenges are largely self-inflicted, pointing to his exit from the Labour Party without first addressing its internal divisions.

He also suggested that Obi’s reliance on the “Obidient” movement did not translate into a solid political structure capable of sustaining long-term party stability.

The Presidency further stated that Obi’s move to the ADC appeared to be an attempt to plug into an existing political platform, despite its own unresolved internal conflicts.

Onanuga noted that the crisis within the party reflects deeper issues, including the involvement of opposition heavyweights such as Atiku Abubakar and Rauf Aregbesola.

Dismissing any alleged connection between Tinubu and the unfolding situation, the presidential aide described the ADC’s troubles as “self-inflicted” and urged party stakeholders to resolve their disputes internally, including disagreements involving Nafiu Bala.

He also downplayed Obi’s political prospects ahead of the 2027 elections, stressing that his third-place finish in the 2023 presidential race does not guarantee a repeat performance.

The crisis within the ADC intensified after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) withdrew recognition from certain factions of the party, citing a court order to maintain the status quo pending a final ruling.

While the ADC has accused INEC of misinterpreting the court’s directive and attempting to undermine opposition forces, the Presidency maintains that the dispute remains strictly internal and unrelated to President Tinubu.
