U.S. Vice President Heads to Pakistan as Iran-Israel Ceasefire Faces Problems
U.S. Vice President JD Vance is traveling to Pakistan on Friday to hold talks aimed at ending the war involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.

Although Iran and the U.S. recently agreed to stop fighting, there is still disagreement over whether that ceasefire includes Lebanon. Israel and the U.S. say the deal only covers Iran and does not apply to Lebanon, where Israel is still fighting Hezbollah. However, Iran says the agreement should also stop fighting in Lebanon.
Israel recently carried out heavy airstrikes in Beirut, the capital of Lebanon. One of the strikes reportedly killed a close aide to Hezbollah’s leader. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel will continue attacking anyone who threatens its citizens.
Another issue causing tension is the Strait of Hormuz, an important sea route where many countries transport oil. Iran had closed the route during the war. Although Iran agreed to reopen it, the country now wants ships to pay high fees before passing through. This has created more disagreement because many countries oppose the idea.
European leaders believe Lebanon should be included in the ceasefire and have also spoken against Iran charging ships to use the Strait of Hormuz.
Because of the ceasefire, Israel has started easing some wartime restrictions. It has reopened the Dome of the Rock for Muslim worshippers and allowed schools to reopen after being shut for over a month.
Meanwhile, in Iran’s capital, Tehran, large crowds gathered to support the government as life slowly returns to normal after the recent fighting.
